volunteer Position: Farm Animal Care Assistant

🌿 About the Role

Join us at Luckie Farms as a Farm Animal Care Assistant and make a real difference in the lives of our animals. This hands-on volunteer opportunity is perfect for animal lovers who want to gain practical farm experience. You’ll help care for a variety of animals, including Highland cows, reindeer, mini donkeys, horses, and rabbits—bottle-feeding calves, walking donkeys, grooming horses, and more—all while enjoying a beautiful farm setting.

 We would like to have volunteers work in pairs of 2-3 and we will ideally have a 2-hour morning shift and afternoon/evening shift.  Volunteers can choose to do 1 to two shifts per week. Below is an outline of general volunteer responsibilities although the individual volunteer duties will depend on a variety of factors including the experience, skill set, and interest of the volunteer. We require a minimum age of 14 for this volunteer position.

🐮 Volunteer Responsibilities

🔄 Morning Tasks:

  • Calves: Bottle-feed, refresh water, clean stalls, practice walking them on a halter (halter training0, and turning out to pasture

  • Reindeer: Feed individually, check water and hay, clean pens and food bowls, and spend time on socializing and training

  • Donkeys: Feed, clean shelter area, refresh water, take on walks, and grooming sessions

  • Cattle & Yaks: Inspect fencing, observe and interact with calves, cows, and yaks

  • Horses: Feed, clean stalls, groom, and handle as needed

  • Rabbits: Feed and water, clean habitat, and interact/socialize

🌙 Evening Tasks:

  • Repeat essential care routines as listed above

  • Check electric fencing and hay levels

  • Observe animal behavior and socialize

📆 Weekly Deep Cleaning & Enrichment:

  • Reindeer: Sanitize water troughs, railings, feeders, and toys; introduce enrichment activities

  • Donkeys: Deep clean shelter, handle hooves, and practice full-body desensitization

✅ Ideal Candidates:

  • Passion for animals and being outdoors

  • Comfortable interacting with big animals or learning how to interact with them

  • Ability to follow directions and work independently

  • Comfortable with physical work (lifting, walking, cleaning)

  • Willing to get dirty and work hands-on with animals

  • Reliable, positive, and eager to learn
